Fisker teases butch Model Y competitor
Fisker has released a teaser image of an upcoming affordable electric crossover, hot on the heels of Tesla’s Model Y reveal. The crossover will feature a "futuristic, elegant muscular look,” with a chunky lower grille and a glass plate covering the radar system.
Range is expected to be around 480km thanks to an 80kWh battery pack while power and performance figures are being held back for now. There will be all-wheel drive on higher end models, achieved by having one electric motor on each axle.
Fisker says the cabin will have a head-up display, an "intuitive user interface that will control some of the latest emerging in-vehicle technologies", and lots of high quality materials. There will also be a sort of sunroof, for an "open-air atmosphere ... without compromising the rugged and safe structural integrity" of the car.
The base model will be priced around $US40,000, putting it right up against the Tesla Model Y. Fisker wants to have a prototype of the vehicle up and running by the end of 2019, with production scheduled to kick off in 2021.
That gives Tesla a good two years’ head start, although investors are reportedly underwhelmed by the Model Y’s reveal, reflected in Tesla’s share price dropping 4.5 per cent following the unveiling.
