Is Tesla working on a small urban runabout?
Tesla’s current line-up consists of a large sedan, an SUV and a smaller sedan that’s technically a hatchback. Next on the list is the Model Y crossover and the Cybertruck ute but beyond those two, Tesla hasn’t said what’s in the pipeline. Now though, an image has leaked of a small city car to take on the likes of the Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Ioniq and VW’s ID.3.
The above image reportedly comes from an official Tesla document detailing its new Chinese factory which means the small car could be exclusive to that market.
We’d imagine the car will focus on range and affordability first but Tesla’s habit of making out-and-out performance models might result in an all-wheel drive hot hatch rivalling Toyota’s new GR Yaris and Volkswagen’s upcoming eighth-gen Golf R.
Given this is the first we’ve seen of the smallest Tesla, the rest is speculation. But, if it ends up here and slots below the Model 3, New Zealand buyers could be looking at a circa-$50k Tesla, especially if it is made in China.
